Robert H. Sorensen, MD, is double board-certified in both dermatology and Mohs Micrographic surgery. He recently relocated to Palmer, Alaska, with his wife and six children, and is thrilled to be opening Mat-Su Dermatology alongside his fellow Air Force wingman, Dr. Willardson.
Dr. Sorensen completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University and received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he received the Cervantes Award for International Surgery. He completed his dermatology residency training at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his accomplishments.
After residency training, Dr. Sorensen was appointed as Chief of Dermatology at the Air Force’s largest treatment facility, David Grant Medical Center. During his time there, he re-opened the Mohs Surgery clinic for the first time in 20 years and taught anatomy and surgical reconstruction at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program.
As a professor of dermatology, Dr. Sorensen has over 5,000 hours of experience instructing Family Medicine residents and physician assistants in general dermatology. He has published several academic articles and original research studies in top peer-reviewed medical journals, including the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Pediatric Dermatology, and Dermatologic Surgery.
Beyond dermatology, Dr. Sorensen enjoys playing guitar and mandolin, and loves performing with his family’s bluegrass band. He also enjoys skiing, mountain biking, and can probably be convinced at any moment to drop everything and play pickleball.
Hal Bret Willardson, MD, is a double board-certified physician in both dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery. He was born and raised in Palmer, Alaska, and is a proud graduate of Palmer High School. He completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University, then attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he graduated in the top 10% of his class and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
After graduation, Dr. Willardson spent two years practicing sports medicine at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, caring for musculoskeletal injuries sustained by young Airmen entering their military service. He then completed his dermatology residency training at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium in San Antonio, TX, taking on the role and responsibilities of chief resident during his last year of training. During his medical training, Dr. Willardson published several peer-reviewed articles and original studies on skin cancer and dermatologic treatments in some of the most prestigious dermatology journals.
Dr. Willardson serves the active and retired military community in Alaska as the Chief of Dermatology at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Hospital. In a few short months, he will finish his military service and transition to working full-time at Mat-Su Dermatology. It has been his honor to care for those who serve and sacrifice so much to defend our country’s freedoms and ideals.
Outside of work, Dr. Willardson loves to spend time with his wife and four kids. While golf is his first and greatest outdoor love, he also enjoys hiking, skiing, fishing, camping, and gardening. He feels privileged to be back home, working alongside Dr. Sorensen in the community and state he was raised in, and serving the wonderful people of the Mat-Su Valley and Alaska.
